The article describes the repair of large pistons of ship diesel engines with twin-wire submerged arc welding using basic cored wires. The piston materials are 34CrMo4 and 42CrMo4 and the wires used are OK Tubrod 15.21S (0.5%Mo) for the build-up layers and OK Tubrodur 15.40 for the wear resistant top layers. The welding method replaced single wire SAW with solid wire, providing a 25% productivity increase without any increase in production costs.
