Filarc 118 MMA Electrode Now Meets H4R Requirements, Offers Exceptional Performance On High-Strengh Steels

ESAB has improved its Filarc 118 MMA electrode to H4R classification SFA/AWS A5.5 E11018-M H4R — to meet more demanding industry requirements for low hydrogen and moisture resistance. This low-alloy electrode contains 2.3% Ni and 0.4% Mo for welding high-stength steels used in construction, mobile machinery, cranes, offshore and maintenance/repair applications where an all-position electrode with a much harder and tougher yield is necessary.

Filarc 118 offers a typical as-welded Charpy V-Notch toughness of 80 J at -50 °C, a yield strength of 750 MPa and a tensile strength of 820 MPa. Filarc 118 carries approvals from all major regulatory bodies, including ABS, BV, CE, DNV-GL, LR, and MoD. Filarc 118 operates on AC, DC+ or DC- weld current (DC- should be used for root passes) and offers all-position performance.

“The field reports from Filarc 118 users are excellent,” Jean-Philippe Ernoult, Global Product Manager for Non- and Low-Alloyed Electrodes, ESAB. “One of our large crane manufacturer customers uses our reformulated electrode for high strength steels where overheating is not an option because it could degrade mechanical properties. The welders tell us that they can weld with Filarc 118 at lower amperage yet retain exceptional arc stability and puddle control.”

Ernoult explains that where MMA electrodes for high-strength steels typically compromise on weldability, Filarc 118 is formulated to be operator friendly. It has good arc concentration, good wetting and tie-in at the toes of the weld and a small, manageable weld puddle. “Using an electrode that provides smaller weld beads and allows for multiple passes at lower amperages minimises the risk of stress cracking,” he says.
 
Protected Integrity

Filarc 118 is available in 2.5 or 3.2 mm diameter and 350 mm lengths or 4.0 and 5.0 mm diameter and 450 mm lengths. Filarc comes in a master carton that contains either four or six VacPac™ vacuum-sealed packages that each weigh approximately 0.8 - 2.3 kg. VacPac features a laminated, multi-layer aluminium foil that is hermetically sealed around a strong plastic inner box. Protected by a cardboard outer box, they do not require special warehouse conditions. Upon opening, fresh and dry electrodes are guaranteed when the vacuum is confirmed. Designed for moisture resistance, R electrodes have less than 0.4 percent moisture absorption after 9 hours of exposure at 27 oC and 80 percent relative humidity.There is no need to bake or store them temporarily in holding ovens or quivers to meet low-hydrogen requirements during a typical work shift.
